Barlow Shoes has been servicing the public since 1893, however the family business has been operating since 1868 when Thomas Judd (pictured) first came to Australia from England by ship and opened Judd's Shoes.
Barlow's founder, Mr Arthur William Barlow, emigrated to Adelaide from England in 1893. Arthur Barlow then moved to 12 Rundle Street (now Rundle Mall) and opened a new shoe store. Five years later, a second Rundle Street store was opened at 67 Rundle Street and soon afterwards, three more branches were opened in Port Adelaide, Moonta and Kadina. Arthur Barlow's two sons helped manage all stores for their father who died aged 95 in 1969.
The present store at 67 Rundle Mall, was acquired by the Whittenbury family in 1961 - direct descendants of Thomas Judd.
The current hierarchy of the company is made up of three working directors, Gavin, Damien and Brenton Whittenbury. Mr Brenton Whittenbury who has been with the firm for over 29 years, has seen a lot of fashion trends and to keep very competitive in this trade, he has shown a keen interest in what the public require.
As a proudly operated store in South Australia, we pride ourselves on our quality of service and our knowledge to our customers, as it is in our interest to see the business survive in this very competitive trade.
With Gavin and Damien Whittenbury working in the trade it now completes the sixth generation of one of Adelaide's retailing icons.
